Pelham’s New Community Centre
After more than 25 years in the making, Pelham’s new Meridian Community Centre is open — on time and under budget! The Centre will serve as a community hub for residents of all ages, offering a wide-variety of recreational, social, health and community activities for many years to come. Seniors, youth, and families alike, will be able to gather and enjoy each other’s company, while building lasting community connections.
Home to the Jr. B Pelham Panthers, Southern Tier AAA Admirals, Pelham Raiders Lacrosse, Niagara Centre Skating Club, Pelham Minor Hockey Association, and the Pelham Panthers Basketball Association, the community centre is home to our champions and the place for your “moments that matter.”
The stunning 143,000 square foot facility includes adaptable and multi-purpose community rooms, a large activity centre with two full courts, two NHL-sized arenas, an indoor walking/running track, concession areas, change rooms & washrooms, and an atrium/lobby area.
Seniors will be able to make use of the centralized walking track, friends and family will be able to cheer their champions on from the upper viewing decks, and teens will able to build positive relationships by participating in any number of team sports. Residents can also look forward to exciting events in the Centre’s multi-purpose spaces, from home-shows to art shows to concerts and dinners to bridal shows, art exhibits, and galas.
The Centre is also dedicated to welcoming all residents, by ensuring that the new facilities are fully accessible.
On-Time and Under-Budget:
On Tuesday, September 4, the Meridian Community Centre Oversight Committee reported that the project was delivered on-time and under budget by $705,949. Heralded as a near-unprecedented achievement, Mayor Dave Augustyn and Council acknowledged the committee’s efforts along with the collaborative efforts by several groups.
When Council approved the Community Centre in April 2016, some residents were concerned about overall project costs and construction timing. It is basically unheard of to have a public project of this size delivered on time and under budget. It came together because of the outstanding work of every member of Oversight Committee, Town Staff, Ball Construction, Petroff Architects, and all the sub-trades.
More than $3 Million Raised:
Thanks to the generosity of the community, the Town of Pelham announced during a July Council meeting that it exceeded its fundraising goal of $3 million dollars for the Meridian Community Centre.
Major donors include: the Meridian Credit Union, the Accursi Family, Accipiter Radar Technology, and Dulliban Insurance Company.
It is heartwarming to see how citizens, community groups, and business leaders have come together to embrace this project.
